UW Schools of Public Health and Pharmacy Sign MOU with University of Namibia

The University of Washington and the University of Namibia (UNAM) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), in support of collaborative pharmacy education and training, Faculty exchange, and research between the two institutions.

The memorandum was signed by Dr. Howard Frumkin, Dean of the UW School of Public Health; Dr. Thomas Baillie, Dean of the UW School of Pharmacy; Dr. King Holmes, Chair of the UW Department of Global Health; Prof. Lazarus Hangula, Vice Chancellor, UNAM; and Dr. Kenneth Matengu, Director of External and International Relations, UNAM.  The agreement outlines areas of cooperation between the two institutions including joint research activities and publications, and opportunities for exchange of teaching and research directed to the newly established School of Pharmacy at UNAM.

Faculty and students in the UW Global Medicines Program have long had ties with the pharmacy program in Namibia.  They have collaborated with UNAM, the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services, and Management Sciences for Health to conduct trainings, advise UNAM faculty regarding curriculum development, and provide technical assistance on a range of activities and projects that have enhanced both programs.  This includes assistance in establishing the new pharmacy degree program at UNAM that welcomed its inaugural class of students in to the School of Pharmacy in February 2011.
